Bought a small can of black paint and somewhere on the end of a stick in the pile I write the month and year it was split

Never thought of this - I have different stacks - each a year's worth, and just go in a rotation. I know from memory that the wood in this year's stack was cut in 2013, the wood in next year's stack in 2014, and so on. I just started a new stack that I should not have to burn until 2021.

Do you go clockwise or widdershins ?

i could mark mine by:
- I have no idea where this
- this came from my yard
- this came from a neighbors yard
- this came from a friends yard
- this one is heavy
- this one toppled over 3 times
- this one toppled over 1 time
- this one didn't topple over, must be newer
- i don't know where this pile came from
- this one probably is in the way, and i should have moved it a while ago
- this one was in the way over there, now its in the way over here.

I never gave it much thought. Just write month and year on a split after stacking. I process 4-6 cord every couple years so it is not that hard.

i do have one pile that is all honey locust. i don't have it marked though.

U guys reminded me with this thread that I don't have a "system" yet.

Easy enuff as it's a linear setup with a hedgerow of cedars as supports.
I'll just work it left to right (the order it was split n' stacked) and leave a gap that
slowly travels in order of use. All greenage is at the far end on purpose so it'll work.

For you labelers, maybe just a month/ year with a rattle can of spray paint.
That's how the tree guys do their red X marking for the crew to follow up on.

I wasn't sure which pic to post and still working on getting it right. Below is the "shoulder mess"
which goes first and much is now under the overhang front soffit.
