This scrounging obsession has control over me.... With over 21 cords (real cords) currently stacked. a split pile that I'm guessing has another 3 cords in it, about another cord worth of rounds to be split and on my way home from a lunch time run I come across the town highway dept cutting along the road. I stop and fill up the truck (approx 1/3 cord per load I figure). While loading a guy pulls over and yells "hey do you want fire wood?" .... I replied "always looking" .... he hands me his business card (tree service) and says he has a crew at a house down the road and more than I would ever want at another location within a couple miles. Run home, drop off the load I had. Didnt find him at first so I picked up a second load from the town crew ... while loading that a lady stops and yells "hey, do you want wood? We just had trees taken done, come take all you want" and gives me her address. I pass her house on the way home and see the wood she was referring to (a lot!). Drop off the second load at home. Do a few things for work (home office) then run out to find the tree service guy. I find him and he was finished for the day but showed me the wood he was referring to and said, come back tomorrow around 9 and take all you want.

I just cant stop ..... and I love it!

Wow - Do I every envy you.
You know, you sell some off and be one of the 0.05% of people who sell full cords of actually seasoned firewood.
At least make back some of your gas money that way.
AND you'd have a reason to keep going =D Win/Win

Wow! When it rains it pours. Nice that you have the time to run around like that. I only get about 1/2 a day every couple weeks this time of year and the darn holidays don't help things any.

I bet that Elite can eat some wood if it wants too.

I'm The same way, bout 9 cord CSS'ed, one trailer full waiting on CSS, get the call again yesterday and go and fill trailer #2... It's an adiction..

Got wood.

Sounds like you got plenty. I am guessing you have a hydraulic splitter? Sounds like the perfect time to start making some money. Start selling seasoned cord wood. If you are getting all that for free. Ever consider that?

Nice scores man!

The Elite is a hungry beast! This is year 4 with it and I have gone through between 5-6 cords each year. Running less this year from a combo of better wood, warmer temps and better knowledge on my part. I really love the Elite for its appearance and ability to heat the entire house .... but it is hungry!

I had an opportunity to sell some a month or so ago and decided I just didnt want to. The amount of work put into processing a cord of wood and getting a couple hundred bucks for it just isnt worth it. There will/could be a time when the scrounging runs cold or I'm not able to do it for time or health reasons and figure its worth much more to get ahead and stay ahead.

I'd say you'll be ahead alright! Good for you!

Every time I think I have enough to sell some I come to the same realization. I am only 3 years ahead right now.

Go buy $10 worth of lottery tickets .....you can't miss !! :) I'm getting to be the same way, constantly looking for wood to scrounge, even tho I have 5 years worth c/s/s ... I will always find room for more free firewood !

Ditto! Sometimes when I get the stink eye or stink tone from the wife when feeling if I have the chance to go cut ( she's stay at home w 2 kids under 2.5 so lol), I feed the need by starting the chainsaw in my yard and letting it run for a little... Love that 2 stroke smell n sound.... Whoooooo!!

Price is right, close by, gotta get it.
Catch your breath & take a few pictures :)
Over 21 cords CSS, would really make us drool
Take the oldest with you if not cutting, slows you down but they have fun & learn allot & good memories ;)

Man. Really sweet deal. Do these tree service guys usually do that? My bosses sister works for a tree service....

Being real far ahead makes wood gathering easy - we do it when we like to, not when we have to - I'm at 20 cord now, and I'm heading out tomorrow to start on what might push me to 23 or so cord on hand. I love the independence of seeing that much wood on the property. Hurt my shoulder a while back and it's nice knowing that if it gets worse, or if I am finally forced by the doctor to rest the damn thing ( :red: ), that I don't have any rush to gather next years wood, or the next, or the next, or the next. Cheers!

Couple loads a day and you will be lookin trim for the holidays.

You can never have enough..... well maybe YOU can, but I can never seem to have enough... 20 cord before this burning season started, so I have 5 years worth, and I am always looking for more

GW, what kinds of wood are you getting this time?

A real mix .... oak, ash, maple, cherry, elm, locus are the majority around here. I have some pine but not much, if its real easy to scrounge I'll take it.

I'll try and remember to get the camara out this weekend and add some pic's of "woodland"

I can't imagine 21 cords. Wow.... I'd take a year off, maybe sell a saw..... maybe

Nothing wrong with that. :coolsmirk: I have about 12 full cords of dead & very dry Red Oak,White Oak & Shagbark Hickory split & stacked at parents acreage 1 hr west of me & about 3 cords of the same in my backyard here in town.Roughly 3-4 yrs worth. Yesterday leaving their place I noticed 3 guys from County Road Department about a mile from them on same gravel road clearing trees that were in the right of way next to both sides of road.1 large backhoe & 2 guys with saws knocking them down & piling them in the ditches.

Mostly Red Oak & Mulberry,up to 16" or so. I dont really need it,but its free for the taking & easy to grab.Next week or so I hope to get out that way again, gonna have my saw & X25 in the truck & park at the edge of road for an hour or two.Looks like I can get 2-3 p/u loads pretty easily,Just cut off chunks & leave the brush where it is.No one else will grab it,it'll rot if I dont.

PIC"S Pic's I got to see this porn?

LOL I'll remember to bring my camera when I go out there next. Some they really screwed up,looks like a giant pile of Pick-Up Sticks (remember those? I do ;-P ) But most is stacked pretty evenly & not hard to access.

I'm only gonna cut from the butt end, until its buried. If its not sticking out,I wont waste time or effort trying to winch out any of that crap lol
