Hi,

Moved into the house last December, which was built in the 70s with an old style heatillator. About 10-15 years ago a fireplace insert was put in which I assume bypassed the heatillator as it didn't work since then. We burned last year, about 2-2.25 cords of wood. No issues with the inspection last year except that the insert and all was installed without insulation up the chimney, no mention of a rusted firebox/heatillator. The person who inspected it used both terms so I'm not sure what to think. I'm having the company who installed the insert come tomorrow to do another inspection to get another opinion. What would all of you do? If the heatillator is rusted, does that matter since it's not used anymore? It's an exterior chimney. What is the difference between the firebox and the heatillator, in this situation? (I'm new to this, last season was my first one where I did any of this). House is technically my father in laws but we are buying it...soonish.

Is this a masonry structure with a metal firebox in it? Or is it a prefab fireplace in a framed chase?

That's a wonderful question....uh I'm not sure. The fireplace original was built with the house. But it is a brick structure and I think it has a metal firebox. But if you can clarify in a way a noob like I can understand I will try to answer it better;):)

Oh I think I understand now. I believe it's a masonry with a metal firebox

If that is the case the old firebox bring rusted doesn't matter at all.

Awesome thanks. That's what I was leaning towards, something about the conversation didn't seem right. I have the other place coming out tomorrow so I'll keep that appointment just for peace of mind. Appreciate your response!
