Is it generally a bad idea to insulate behind my insert? I have an exterior chimney and can feel the bricks outside are warm. Would it be a good or bad idea to pull the insert and stick some Roxul back there before pushing the stove back to keep more heat towards the living area? Thanks for your responses.

If you do that, make sure you leave an air space between the insulation & the rear of the insert. Otherwise, you will keep more heat in the box itself & it's not designed to operate that way. We routinely build an insulated shroud around the Jotul inserts - with the insulation on the outside of the metal - to get more heat directed towards the room, but we always leave a couple of inches to allow for convection...
