Insulation behind faceplate to prevent heat loss?

Is this a bad idea? did my installer forget to do this?

The faceplate around my insert doesn't sit flush with the stone surround. The stone surround isn't a flat surface so I wouldn't expect it to sit flush but I'm worried this is causing major heat loss. I want to insulate that area since the sides have and inch + opening....this sounds like a fire hazard...any advice from the experts...
 
It might not be a safety issue. How is the stove vented? Was the stove installed with a full liner?

Yes, insert is vented through chimney using 6" insulated pipe
 
You should be fine then.
