Good idea. My brother does it for his shower - works really well. He just runs the cold water supply to the shower through a HX in the shower drain. Has to be cleaned out from time to time, but drastically reduces HW consumption. Much easier to do when you're building the house, and it really only works in situations like showers where hot water is going to be running for a long time.
