Curious. What would a proprietary app for this site do that the browsers like Safari for the iPhone doesn't do?

    Not much.
BUT, there are special forum apps like tapatalk and other skins which detect mobile use and offer a special menu suited to a smaller screen.

These apps cost money usually.....although the special skins we could put on this end don't. I honestly think even at $2.00, only a limited number of forum users would buy it....but some would.

When it comes to a full blown app, that would cost thousands or even more to develop and could offer stuff like fuel cost calc, etc. in a better format. Again, I wonder if we would have a limited audience as we'd have to give it away free. I'll carefully check out iphone stats (users who are using them) and see what makes sense.

If we do upgrade our forum, which I somewhat expect someday, the "skin" part will probably be automatically implemented - that is, the forum will detect your mobile browser and offer you a nicer format.

iphone sent about 2% of visits in the last month.
    android the same.
ipad about the same, but ipad is large screen so a skin doesn't do as much....most things are fine as-is.

So an actual app would have to be in both iphone and android format, quite a job. But, hey, I'm willing to take free development work from volunteers who know how to write such stuff....

Night and day! Try using safari to view craigslist on an iphone, then download the free craigslist app. What a difference. Now try using safari to view facebook on the iphone. Now the free app. Ebay, etc.
Web browsers on the iphone are not the best experience, but an app is!

I would say do the iphone first (because it will also work in the ipad).

I very seldom use a web browser on my iphone, too tiny and hard to navigate.

There is a glimmer of hope. I am in touch with a company that claims they are working on the code as we speak.....for a mobile "skin" for this forum software.

I just hope it doesn't automatically end every post with "Sent from my iPhone" like the emails I get from friends. I always end the responses with "Sent from my iDishwasher.".

Having moved from blackberry to android, I actually like viewing the 'real' webpage. Zooming in so I can read it isn't a big issue for me. I can post a new topic, and uploading pics is easy if they are sized right to begin with. I couldn't do that with blackberry. I use my phone a lot, since I don't have a laptop. I'm gone overnight for work twice a week, and right now I'm sitting in front of the fire.
I probably wouldn't use a dedicated app. I hate the facebook app for android. Another forum I frequent has a mobile version that is pretty slick, and if there was something like that here, I would probably use it, too.

    Why Iphone first??????????????

TAPATALK SUPPORTS ANDROID & IPHONE & IPAD'S & TABLETS... Tapatalk only cost about $30.00 bucks for the site owner. For my phone it only cost a few dollars, and its for more than just one site... most all the forums I frequent are on tapatalk.

As far as them leaving the ol "sent from my iphone/android" bit... you have the option to do custom signatures, just like on this forum... its just that so many people see thier Iphone as a status symbol.

tapatalk is not available for this forum SW as of now.....or I would have already had it.

The skin which is being worked on should work with any of the devices - really just a mobile layout as opposed to an app in itself.

Craig, what is the forum's software, anyway? It resembles phpBB, but isn't, right?

I view the site everyday on my Ipod. I don't think its difficult to view. I view at work and other various areas where I can get wiress capabilities. Its easy because its right there and takes only a second to access my bookmarks.

Webmaster beat me to it, not being on tap. I'd vote for tapatalk before giving it to just one phone.

When I need to, I just use my browser on my Droid. Not that difficult.

Nothing yet. I am still using a very old version of the site software because old versions tend to be more stable and secure (fewer surprises).

I doubt we will ever have an app....which does anything special at the forum. It is more likely to be either tapatalk...or even more likely, a couple of mobile "skins" which will automatically show up when folks use smart phones to access.

Realistically, I don't imagine upgrading the whole ball of wax until the spring. I hate to make major changes when things are hot, hot hot.

I'm just using my iPhone and safari most of the time and it works great for me just the way it is...
  19. drfera Member

Same here. In fact, I haven't found a single website app that makes it better or easier to navigate the site than by just using Safari.

I just got the new iPhone 4S. I'm dictating this entire response. This dictation software is wicked cool and probably the best thing I've ever used. This should be really nice for people who can't spell or have a tendency to use strange abbreviations. The only problem is that I hate sitting here in my office talking to my phone, feels kind of weird. Other than that this could be super useful!

Yeah so I should hold the phone up to my head like I'm just having a phone conversation and nobody will find that strange.

Wife has the 4 as well. Mine has faster processor, that dictation/Siri stuff, and the camera is a little better. You aren't missing much, and I only got this because I was moving to an iPhone anyway. I wouldn't move from the 4, either. I'll be jealous next year when you have the 5!
