How to I tell if my fire place is actually a wood burning fireplace vs. just a gas (log) type fireplace?

In that case it can probably work as either if it has a gas line to it. But really you need to have it inspected by a pro before using it to be sure

Yup. Built for wood. Can be converted for a gas insert. As bholler said, get it checked out before using it.
