I've read on here that the bricks in the stove should not have black soot on them. Is it normal that the bricks develop the black soot at the begining of the fire? By the time the cycle is over my bricks are clean again.
Is it normal?

Happens all the time. Ignore it unless it doesn't ever burn off but builds up thicker. Then there is a problem. Otherwise, forget it.
