Looking at these saws, will either of them pull a 24" bar - with full chisel chain thru large red oak and white oak logs 36+ inches? I have a farm boss with a 20" bar and it is not up to the job - I have been getting free wood from a tree guy and some of the stuff he drops is 'huge' compared to what i use to pay for.

Is there an advantage to either saw? I understand they can both be 'upgraded' to the next model up with some grinding, it seems the 365 is out of stock at a lot of places.

How would they do with 28" bars or is that pushing it? How do they compare ergonomics/weight wise to the ms290?

i saw Husqvaran running a 20% off black friday sale - anyone know of anywhere I could order a 365 at a good price?

i have a 28" bar for my 2172 and it is slow in big oak. looks like the 2166 is same displacement but quite a bit lower on hp. i would think a 24" is all i would want on that saw, especially in hardwoods. i cant do any comparing to your stihl but i do love my j-red and husky saws.

I have a ms310 stihl and a 365xp with the baffles ground out, fully fueled and oiled they are exactly 2lbs apart. That is with a 20" on the 310 and a 24" on the 365. A buddy works for a tree service and they run 28" on the 365's and says it is fine, but he's not a performance junky like me. I have only cut fir with mine, but I am sure it would pull a 28 in softwood with the upgrade that is done. I have pics of what needs to be ground if you need them in the future....

The 2166 will. A skip tooth chain will make it better. That is a nice saw. I think they are the same a a 2172 but detuned a little. Still a good smooth saw

Thanks -

New Jonsered 2166 with warranty or used (unknown age) Husqvarna 576XP with Autotune (slightly cheaper then new 2166-no warranty) - both with 24" bars

EDIT: Pulled the trigger on the new Jonsered with a 24" bar - last one in stock for the holiday sale

After a few hours on it you should pop the shiny cover off the cylinder that is visible in your pic just in from of the handle.
I am pretty sure it will be the same as the husky. Simply grind out the baffle like I did and it will perform like a 71cc saw!

Enjoy your first cut!!!!

first impression - this is one mean son of a B%tch (from my limited experience with saws)

pulled a 24" bar through large red oak like a bread knife trough rye - seriously though it did put the farm boss to shame, i made through all these logs with relative ease in a more than acceptable amount of time

I did manage to flood it first time I tried to start it (pretty good) - guess the trick is not to use the decompressor until ti breaks in a little

some saw porn for ya

Nice! thats a good sized stick to break it in on! No replacement for displacement!

Got some more use out of it. After a few hours of cutting I can honestly say its got plenty of power for an average Joe like me cutting firewood, small stuff is cake and the large rounds are manageable - sure a bigger saw would be easier but this handles it pretty good. It pulls itself hard enough into the wood when the chain is sharp that it will jam your knuckle into the break if you know what I mean

I can cut enough logs into rounds in an hour now to keep me busy splitting and stacking the rest of the day (I like to cut a bunch, split a bunch, and then stack it in 4-6hour blocks so I dont get too tired doing one thing) This saw verse the farmboss I can get a lot more cut and less fatigue doing it

Has gotten a little easier to start or I just have gotten better at starting it
