Jotul Short Leg Kit Question

The manual is the guiding document for inspection. If a variance from the manual is required then it should be documented in writing by Jotul. Note that with the short leg kit the ember protection only hearth requirement is null and void. The hearth underneath the stove needs to provide much more protection. That is why the manual says Hearth Mount Only. That said, Jotul might provide a variance for a Type 2 hearth pad which has a higher insulation value. Perhaps contact Jotul directly? If they approve, be sure to get it in writing for insurance and inspection purposes.

Or, if possible, consider having the stove inside the fireplace so that it is entirely on the hearth and get a hearth extension pad to cover 16" in front of the stove door.

Or consult with a mason on making the thimble safe. It will need 12" clearance from combustibles in all directions. Afterward it can be tiled over with some decorative tiles to make it look attractive. More clearance details are in your wife's thread on this topic.
