Question:

We love our Jotul model 3. It was installed in April. Despite meticulous care in building our fire- using only dried oak and no newspaper- we find our window gets very sooty and grimy. Do others have this problem and how do you recommend dealing with it?? Thank you.

Answer:

Depends on which model #3. If it is an older one..with the draft dial on the door- there is no hope...This does not have the "airwash" system that's on the newer ones. If it's newer.... well- mostly start it up hot and fast to warm the chimney..newspaper and lots of kindling is fine. This gets the draft moving quickly - allowing the airwash to become effective.
