This is a small tree just off the trail near the swamp, what type of tree is it?

Yes,but not in that area. Lots of Cherry in that same area.

Is that a long, pointy end bud I see on the second picture? Those are characteristic of Beech trees. Check out some large Beech and you should see them, and they can help you recognize small Beech.

those small trees tend to throw me off when there arent any leaves..some when not mature look alot different
