leaking chimney

We buy wood with our neighbour but they are having problems with their fireplace and might not be burning this year . They had their chimney rebuilt from the roof up and the oil furnace replaced. The new furnace required a liner for the chimney. Since then they have been getting smoke in the house when using their fireplace, even in the basement. The mason who was working on our chimney said this was due to leaking from the fireplace flue not being able to leak out the flue for the furnace. Three recommendations: give up burning wood, put in an insert, rebuild the chimney again. Options 2 and 3 cost about the same amount.

Is there no way to replace the 8x12 clay liner in a chimney without removing all the exterior brick? Is this the sort of situation a poured reline could be used? Is this to code in Ontario, Canada?

Any ideas or recommendations to help them out?

Take a look at the top of their chimney. Are the fireplace and the oil burner flues terminated at about the same height?

If so, that's the problem, the fireplace flue will need to be extended. And the webmaster just might have a solution for them.
