I use one squeezed lemon daily, Instead of throwing in out. I drop it in the water steamer (large stainless pot).
The lemons have eliminated all the scale build up in the pot. The citrus does amazing job keeping the pot clean.

If you don't have lemons, a teaspoon of vinegar will also help reduce scale.

What about my rusty old cast iron pot? Bead blast it and re-season it? Get a stainless pot instead?

Cast iron is just to much work . I took a wire wheel to mine & painted it with Por -15 .
It stands on the hearth as an ornament.
I find the big stainless pot , the most effective easy to maintain.

I get scale build up in my soapstone stove from the funk in the water. What's the problem with scale?

I was hoping that the citrus made your home smell lemon fresh. Did it?
