oil furnace or boiler can blowup. some fireman call it a backfire. unless it does damage like that one did. it happens when the coil or electrodes are defective or worn out. oil starts pumping into the fire chamber and before the fire o matic (firematic) kicks out the motor it throws a spark in a oil filled chamber. most times it just give a big boom and fills the room with black smoke.

We call this a "delayed ignition" . . . normally not a big deal . . . typically fills the house up with smoke and fine soot . . . sometimes -- as mentioned -- the results can be more spectacular.
