When I first started cutting this, I thought it was a cherry or some other nut tree until I split it. Then I looked hard at the bark and it didn't have that "burnt potato chip" look Thistle told me about in cherries. But next to the cherry rounds, it sure looks the same. My quess is black oak with that smooth bark. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bruce

My guess is Pin Oak. It is not Black Oak, which has a rough bark that resembles tire tread, and the wood isn't like the Black Oak I have cut. The bark looks like Pin Oak and I see medullary rays in the end of the round (I think) which makes it an oak. I haven't cut Pin Oak so I don't know what it should look like. The wood reminds me of Honey Locust but the bark and the medullary rays make me change my guess to Pin Oak. I am sure you would have mentioned the six inch thorns on a Honey locust.

Its definately not cherry. Its oak.

I agree with Wood Duck, pin oak.

looks like red oak to me....at least we all agree on oak...premium btu;s

Northern Red or Northern Pin.
