Bacffin

Minister of Fire
This was the last log of the day. It has no bark, lots of check marks and I thought I would just wack this out and call it a day. Well, let me tell you it kicked the crap out of me. It was like wrestling a king size matress up stairs with a skinny wife.!!!
Anyway, I think it is an ash. It did not cut easy with the Rancher, had to sharpen the chain twice by the time I was done and I need to do it again. There was no bite to it at all. It kept skipping like I was cutting ceramic. But when I was done I put the moisture meter on it and think I found out why why it sucked to cut. It's dry already==c. Is this ash? I'll bet half of this can be used this winter. What do you think?

Thanks,
Bruce

A couple more. Notice the checking around the rounds.

ASH for sure

I was going to say that it's definitely not ash. The color seems about right but Ash is usually easy to split and not stringy. Also grows more evenly straight and cylindrical then the oblong rounds shown.

That said, characteristics do vary in different conditions. That's a tough one without bark.

I think ash can be very stringy. Ash I use a small ax at the splitter.

It looks like a ash but every ash I've gotten the last 5 or so years has the EAB trails on every round under the bark. Unless the emerald ash borer hasn't hit your neck of the woods yet.

I think the EAB is a far east as Albany and western Ma. I have not heard of any reports in my area...yet. I assume when it does arrive, we will have plenty of ash to burn though.

Thanks

It doesn't look quite right but any chance it could be Box Elder? Picture 10/10 if you look at the cutside it has sort of that "butterfly" patten that Box Elder gets, but the growth rings don't look right....

Ash.

I have 2 more of these no bark "rock ash" in the pile that look just like this one. With the already lower moisture readings, about how long after I split do you think it will take to be dry? I'm just curious because I have no ieda about drying times for a given species.

Thanks,
Bruce

Burn it any time you please Bruce. As you know, ash has about the lowest moisture content when green and it also dries fairly quick. Normally a year is sufficient but I like 2 years better. Three is super. However, that stuff you have is ready to burn now.
