I use mine to clean up around the hearth and the ash lip after emptying the ash pan. I do not however clean up any area where there is a chance it could suck up a live coal . . . and even then I am careful as to where I put the ash vac after use (i.e. non combustible surface away from any combustibles) . . . probably overkill on my part, but I feel better about the practice.
