After reading the forum a lot of members think the price for Green Team pellets went up because of the increase in demand. How much longer do you think Somerset pellets will stay $219 a ton? I spoke to a couple of managers at different Lowe's they all said the Somerset pellets sell out with in a 30 minutes of the trucks arrival.

Very possible. Pig hoard 'em while you can. I still have yet to see them.

Lowes only got one shipment of Sets last year, and that was it. I think we've seen all we'll see this year..... already shipped & sold.

The price of Green Team is up because people are willing to pay what I think is a premium price for an average box store pellet. Most folks don't know the difference between a bag GT and Sets. When I ask people who are buying pellets at the time I am looking at store stock, buying pellets is just like buying a gallon of milk.
Average is fine when you just don't know any better and have nothing to compare it too.

I dont think thats true. I think you shop at newburgh. Early in the year they got a shipmant that went quick. Mid winter I was picking them up here and there 10 bags at a time so they had sets through a good part of the winter.

Every Lowes knows when they are going to get a shipment of Somersets. They usually find out they are getting a shipment the week they are supposed to arrive. Unfortunately the employees find it easier to tell us they dont know when they are getting a shipment or they are only getting one shipment a year. My advice is to call every day. Either the employee will give you the one of the two responses above or tell you that they are supposed to arrive this week.

I know the following stores have received Somersets this year
    Danbury
    Poughkipsie
    Utica,
    Chester
    Garden City
    Newburgh
    Auburn

Back to the original topic. If Lowes decides to raise the prices of Somersets, how much more per ton are you willing to pay?

I've never burned them so it's a tough call. but I think that anything at a big box that. I imagine there would need to be a significant discount to them to make them worth my time.
i'm going to have to buy 'regular' non-shoulders anyway, and my truck is a pos, so I get deliveries these days. So, i'm already paying the one-time fee for a delivery, and each ton is only $10 more. So, factor in a one-off delivery of a ton from a big box, i'm looking at 40 bucks or so to rent the truck for an hour, plus do the unload and drive back and back again... that eats into the price pretty good to make it worth while.

    for 209, i'm interested....
for 225, i'm less interested.... but depends on distance.
for 250+, i'm buying 'name brand' from a pellet house and getting them delivered.

Was just in Danbury Lowes, they had a 1/2 pallet on the floor of Greens, no pallet pricing shown.

I've never burned them, but they get good reviews on here. I'd probably go to $240ish before it is just worth spending the few extra bucks for better pellets. I am a former big box buyer (up until this year) of the GTs from Lowes - but I'm not stupid and won't pay $270/ton. I think they just priced themselves out of the market. And I refuse to buy the $219/ton garbage (Green Supremes) they are selling now. That just means I am supporting my local merchants this year.

I paid $5.34 a bag pre season buy for Doug Fir softies. My stove will burn through a bag of GT's in 24 -26 hours. The Softies will go 32-36 hours. The Green supreme I agree is absolute garbage!!!

As you said, it's my opinion.....not forcing anyone to buy them.

But, I burned them for the past couple of winters and they are FAR from the worst pellet I've burned. Are they a little on the ashy side? Yes, but they do give good heat. If they were available at the same price as the other pellets, I'd have no problem with them for the shoulder seasons.

That said, I will not pay a premium for them, so GT's are off the list this year. If the Lowes got some Sets in at a good price, I'd be all over them. Right now, the Timber Heats and Premiums are burning well.

Lowes will NOT be raising the price of Somersets. I can say this after a conversation with the gentleman in charge of distribution of Pellets for Lowes. He had the power while on the phone with me to click the mouse and send a truckload to my local Abington MA (scheduled to arrive at the end of the month and I will post it when they call me). I asked the very same question of him as he made the comment that they would be losing money sending them up here because of shipping cost but that he would accommodate me. His reasoning was in the SKU internally that lumps all pellets EXCEPT for Green Team in the same price point. To them Infernos are the same Somersets.....Let's just hope this stays the same....

I read more on the site than post. It does seem to me that the big box stores need help with this product called wood pellets, and who else better than we to help.
They think all pellets are the same, and I cannot find anyone that cares, in any of the big box 4 stores

Maybe you can call him back and tell him they shouldn't have raised the price on GT's to the level of a super premium pellet because they lost business. Personally they lost my 4 ton order.

Big box stores usually assign everything a separate sku number. If it was me, I'd assign each brand two skus: one for bag pricing and 1 for pallet pricing if they discount it by the ton.
What they probably have is one sku setup for "wood pellets" and everything gets lumped under that one number no matter what the brand is. Lowes may be half right and have 1 sku for what they consider "premium" and 1 sku for "regular".
With the popularity of pellets, you would think it wouldn't be a gamble every year on what you get and who you get it from.

After reading abou the Somersets, I called Danbury Lowes. They are currently carrying: Inferno, Green Team, Green Supreme, North American. All are $219, except Great Team ($279). I asked about the Somersets - he said that they do come in but they are usually being held for someone when they do get there. There is a ton out back now but they are on hold. He didn't know the price but said the Garden Manager could help me. He left for the day so I will call tomorrow and see what he says. What do you guys think is a good price on the Somersets, if I can get them?

Also, please forgive me, I'm still learning....but what about North American? Garbage or ok? I've heard bad stuff about Inferno and GS.

Thanks for all this info - super helpful :)

*whoops. Think I answered my own question by googling a bit. Sorry about that. Seems like the general concensus is North American is "eh". If there is no other choice, they are okay. I'll wait and see on the Somersets. Also, oil company is offering "Warm Front" pellets - going to research them now- for $279+ delivery. Not feeling optimistic.

North American are just re-bagged Curran hardwood, which is NOT a great pellet. I burned some that I got for free from a friend who didn't want them either....never again!

As for the Warm Fronts, they were re-bagged NEWP blend. Also not a great pellet.

And yes....stay FAR away from Infernos & GS.
