Does anyone own one of the "companion" type fire tool sets? I've seen a few on ebay and wonder how they would work for a wood stove. The length of the tools look right. Looks like they were made for coal, I doubt the little tongs that come with them would be of any use. Weighing my options now as to whether I want to build my own, or just buy a cheapy set for this winter.

I'm not familiar with that ebay brand, however,Pilgrim makes nice tools, they have a few mini sets. IMO all you really need for a woodstove is a poker and a shovel, maybe a broom. Cheap tools are a pain, the handles and the tools tend unscrew.

Sorry Webwidow, I should have been more specific. Companion is not a brand. The listing often includes the description of them being a "companion" set. These are little sets. Look here for an example:

Hey Kevin, cute set, yes it is rather short, you might get a hot arm using that poker. Freight is $35! What stove are you burning? You are right this set is for a coal. Most likely one of those small European fireplace coal boxes, and it appears to be more decorative than useful.
