Considering Englander's 17-VL wood stove.
Installation manual makes no mention of protecting combustible wall surfaces just clearance
Doesn't HUD require to protect wall surfaces. Which do I go by?? Already understand double wall venting pipe and floor protection.

Thanks in advance Sooty

The clearances listed in the manual for the stove are the minimums to the nearest combustible surface. This is the tested safe distance. There is no special requirement for additional protection. However, if you want to add more protection there is no harm in doing so. Or you can move the stove further away from walls.

In a mobile home you will need to bolt the stove down to the hearth and it will need an outside air kit (OAK).

HUD requirements for moblie home installations of a wood burning stove are:

1) outside air kit that directly connects to the stove
2) do not install in a sleeping room.
3) stove must be secured to the structure of the home
4) listed factory built chimney with listed rain cap and spark arrestor
5) in accordance to all the manf. instructions
6) follow other HUD requirements (CFR- title 24)

as far as your walls no special HUD protection, follow the clearances in the OM.

Thank you begreen and Owen1508

You may also have other local codes you should check with as well.

Yes, it's good to consult the local inspecting authority before beginning. Bring a drawing or sketch with dimensions and some pictures of the proposed location. Also check what requirements your insurance company will need to be satisfied.

Don't forget to check manual to see if allowed to be installed in mobile homes, some say specifically not to be done...
