Every morning we walk out into our garage and find our way to the cars in the dark( or hit the key fob to get headlights). I am looking for something I can plug into an outlet to use as a motion sensor or I have seen light switches with sensors built in. Have you guys tried anything like this?

I put a switch in downstairs that has a built-in pir on it. Its for an area you have to walk through to get to, and my dad has to leave it on when he goes into his den. Now it shuts off when he goes in and comes on when he comes out. Works perfect. I need another two for the garage.

I realize you're looking for something to go in an outlet however, if you have an overhead light in the garage you could install a simple timer instead of the wall switch.

I've found motion detecting lights to be bothersome as they seem to come on for no apparent reason wasting power.

My friend put these in his kid's rooms since they kept leaving the rooms without turning off teh lights.

I usually just open the garage door, the light on the opener is enough to see in my small garage (24x26)

Or this site has lots of good stuff:

I'm a minor home automation fan... I just can't see being so lazy I can't flip a switch. But I plan to put all the outside lights on motion detectors. I figure they are not only really handy but make a halfway decent burglar alarm of sorts.

I have an LED motion sensing (one of its possible functions) light on my front porch, opposite the front door. So, if someone goes up onto the porch in the dark (or after dark, it turns on even if the porch light is on) the LED light comes on. It makes it easier to see the key lock on the front door, and if someone is snooping around it should raise a question in their mind about being detected - when will the owner show up with a gun and the police be on their way. I put it up mainly for security as I rarely come to that door in the dark.

This light operates on 4 AA batteries, and I use rechargeable batteries and have to recharge them about every three months, maybe longer. It comes on every time I step onto the porch to get more firewood so it gets some heavy use in cold weather. Not real bright, not good for reading a book, or the newspaper, but it lights the porch and steps well enough to see where they are. No electricity needed.

I am moving this to the DIY room guys so more people will see it and provide suggestions.
