That tree sure looks like a red elm. But the inside grain don't. Got me baffeled.
Maybe it's a hybrid! :ahhh:
Maybe it came out of a swamp and picked up some mineral or biological stuff giving it the colour and smell. I'm guessing it was diseased when it came down.
