We just had a lot of excitement around here, the neighbors chimney caught fire and burned. The fire dep. got here quickly so the damage was confined to the framed chimney and a small portion of the roof. I don't know exactly what model of heatilator fireplace it was but the old owner of the house had the chimney shortened a couple years ago by about 6 ft. It definitely did not meet the 10-2 rule.

I'm glad they were able to put it out quickly and everybody got out safely.

Was the heatalator EPA? Wet wood?

Matt

Found out this morning that it was a gas fireplace or heatilator converted to gas. The neighbor said the inspector thought the fire started down low around the firebox, he will be out today to look at it more closely.

Sound like what Elk always talks about concerning framing members over the lintel.

Possibly that, or possibly the old creosote hadn't been properly cleaned if it was the chimney that went up. Another possibility is if it were an air-cooled setup, and when the chimney was shortened they didn't keep the vents opened so that you over cooked the wood...

Hope the inspectors report when it comes out will be available so we can see what happenned.
