Feeling the Heat

I needed a little more power than my 026 has and was looking for a 044/440 mag. Well, I stopped by a local pawn shop today and they had a Makita 6401 which I believe is a Dolmar. At any rate it fired up on the second pull and I got it for $140. Seems like a pretty good deal considering new 6401/6421 are around $600 and used 440s are around $500. I'll probably get the 84cc kit from Baileys here soon and like a 25 or 28" bar.

At any rate, its running a tiny bit lean at WOT and I found that there is a red plastic plug in the H hole when I went to adjust it. The user manual indicates that there should be an adjustment screw in the H slot. Any ideas about this red plug? Can I replace it with a screw?

The carb adjustment screws are under those red plastic caps. They are called "limiter caps," which limit the amount by which you can turn the adjustment screws. They are there to keep the operator from adjusting the saw too rich, thus creating more undesirable emissions (factory environmental standards).

You should be able to adjust the screws somewhat with the caps as they are. If you need more adjustment the caps can modified, which usually means taking a special tool (sometimes a drywall screw will work) to pull the caps and trimming the limiting tab off the caps. Note that many saws should have the trimmed limiter caps returned to where they had been in order to keep the carb adjustment screws from wandering during use.

Hey thanks, I'll try adjusting with the red cap.

Great score! Even the used 6401's from Home Depot seem to go for significantly more than that. Will make for a nice 2 saw line-up.

Bars big bore kit and chains all add up quick. Good score but I would stay where your at until you have to upgrade. Theres a reason why a 440 is 500.00

Jutt, if you run across another deal like that, let me know. Which pawn shop did you score that at? Good job!

Yeah, the color

Good angle grinders are blue.
The best saws are orange!
Hope that clears up the color confusion. :p

Bosch doesn't make chainsaws;)

Have you been talkin to my wife Jay, that sounds familar:)

Makes me sad...there is no such thing as a pawn shop in my area...don't think I've ever even seen one in my life.

Yep! lol J/K but it really doesn't take long to spent 500.00 on a 70+cc saw no matter how you build it.

Lol, yeah good call. Its running pretty darn good as is so I think I'll leave it be until I absolutely need to replace the cylinder, piston etc. This thing is a tank...handled some 30" Cottonwoods pretty easily. But the bar that came on it is pretty darn wornout so I'm going to replace that.

BK- Got it from the EZ Pawn off of Alameda in Lakewood (about 100 yards SW of Sheridan). There is literally another EZ Pawn 2 buildings down the street but the one I went to was closest to Sheridan. There were only 3 chainsaws there...a Homelite, a Poalan Pro and the 6401 I got.

You should check out the gigantic EZ Pawn at the corner of Colfax and Sheridan. I didn't stop by there but I've purchased some other power tools from that location and they always have a TON of power tools. I'll PM ya if I see another good deal.

I would much rather live in a rural wooded area void of pawnshops

You are probably going to take off a high quality German Mahle Nikasil cylinder & piston assembly & put on a China piston & Cyl. with the big bore kit. Check into the quality of the cylinder, those aftermarket ones vary a lot, Randy

Mine will get the Dolmar/Mahle OEM part when/if I do it. If the 7900 won't do it, it's out of my league anyway. I like the fact that it is very reliable.

There are a whole bunch in Worcester if you head to the central part of the state. Just be aware that 'pawn shop' and 'porn shop' are pronounced exactly the same with a Worcester accent. :)

Its running so well now I may not replace the cylinder/piston until I have to but thats something good to keep in mind.

The 6401 is probably going to be my next saw, I think it's tough to find something of higher quality at that price, Randy

Pics please :cheese:
