A farm in Maine
According to a NFI Instructor on average there are 8,000 BTU’s in a lb of wood pellets.

One gallon of # 2 heating oil has 140,000 BTU’s

100 Gallons of #2 oil costs $2.60 today or / $260. for 100 gallons

1 Ton of wood pellets I bought last month cost $244./ ton

The math says there is 160,000,000 BTU’s in a ton of pellets

There is 140,000,000 BTU’s in 100 gallons of #2 heating oil

Right now you will save $16.00 and get 20,000,000 more BTU’s burning wood pellets.

So it's cheaper,
Your money circulates in the economy closer to home which benefits you,
It’s carbon neutral,
It burns cleaner,
and it smells a h#$L of a lot better

Ayuh

Rich, where are you in Maine? Cash price to my house today is $2.18. Check out Maineoil.com, maybe there are better options for you?

We're at 2.44 out here in Central NY. I always used the ole 1 ton of pellets is equal to about 115 gallons of oil. 115x2.44= 281 more or less. A little more expensive than the local pellet prices which go from 260-280 around here.

I ordered oil for my hot water 2 days ago....they delivered yesterday. When I called, I got the oil for 2.27 and when the truck showed up....the new price had gone to 2.37

That's why I locked in at 1.89. I knew it would stay low forever. My brother didn't take my advice and now he's kicking himself. I will still burn pellets, but more out of principle.

Todays oil prices in western MA is 2.64/gal
I'll stick with burning my pellets.

HUH?

it think we should insert the "n't" on the back of "would" in this case. My keyboard often does its own thing and types whatever it willn'ts.

Rich, your NFI instructor must have added some zeroes in his fuel BTU values.

According to the DOE Energy Information Agency web site:

there is approx. 14,000,000 BTU in 100 gallons of #2 heating oil.

there is approx. 16,500,000 BTU in 1 Ton of pellets.

Granted, both your BTUs gained an extra zero but you might want to recheck your figures with out the extra zero.

$2.49 - $2.69 here in Northcentral CT, depending on where you get it. Sticking with my pellets, thank you! ;-)
