Question:

I have a fireplace built in 1907. No firebrick- No damper! I wish to install a stove or insert. Any special permits or codes needed in this urban area? Any recomendations? Thanks for the time...

Answer:

Nothing special- just make certain that the flue is "lined" with terra cotta - or else you should slip a stainless steel tube down it. Even is the flue is lined- use a short 5' section of stainless tubing is used to go through the damper area- and a sheet metal plate around it.
A full relining of the chimney is a great upgrade even if the chimney is already terra-cotta lined.
