my father-in-law is doing a remodel of a property they're looking to move into. he wants to put an insert in his existing ZC fireplace and came across the the quadrafire model shown. he wants to know if it's worth it to use this.

so, is this unit any good, or is it a pre-EPA unit?

thanks

Better check the ZC fireplace maual to see it it's code compliant to install an insert in it.
Many of them aren't. Those old inserts can be fairly heavy & the ZC fireplaces are mostly
made from sheet metal & have little structural strength. If it's not specifically approved,
your building/firecode inspector will have the final say.

actually, now that i think about it, it might actually be a brick chimney...

If you get the OK- one way or the other, you WILL need to run a liner from the insert to the cap.
If it's NOT a terra cotta lined masonry chimney, you will need to use an insulation wrapped liner...

Look up top inside to see if it has a baffle and burn tubes, that'll tell you if it's a secondary burner.
