We recently moved into a home with a small open fireplace in the bedroom. It is LP logs with 13"x13" terra cotta lined flue in masonry chimney. The sweep said he noticed some mortar missing between some tiles and some cracks in tiles. There was also no rain cap. I'm assuming this would be considered unsafe? I'm installing the rain cap either way just for weather protection. A little fire for an hour at bedtime would sure be nice when its cold... Have heat pump with electric backup.

Best thing to do would be to ask your chimney sweep if it is safe...since he's already seen it.

Cracked tiles and missing mortar from joints qualify the chimney as unsafe. Repairs should be made before use.

You are welcome. You should likely be using a direct vent appliance in a bedroom. Around here code prohibits vented gas logs in a bedroom.

Yes flames is right in most areas open gas logs or wood burning appliances or fireplaces are not allowed in bedrooms. Also you really wont get much usable heat from an open fireplace regardless of wether it is gas or wood fired

In addition, the flue must be blocked open with the installation of the gas log, so, even when you're not using it, the chimney is sucking heat out of the room. It's what a chimney does.
