So an outdoor wall light fixture by our side door broke. There is all kinds of choices to replace it with. Should I buy an LED specific outdoor wall light fixture (expensive: the one the wife likes are $120 each) based on the fact that incandescent bulbs are on the way out, or buy a regular incandescent fixture and eventually put an LED bulb in it?

I agree. The bulb socket will be supported for the rest of your life. The proprietary led in that fixture could be gone tomorrow.

Do you have a death wish? You answered your own question with "the one the wife likes are $120 each".

If she ain't happy, no one's happy.
If you aren't happy, no one cares!

Oh, she'll find a more expensive fixture she likes with an edison socket....:p
