Zap., cat. stoves are amazing! But you have to burn good, clean, seasoned fuel (I know I'm preaching to the choir). If you don't, a cat. stove will struggle the same way any other stove will, but you'll "know about it sooner". If "marginal wood" is a variable in the catalytic equation... it will take a lot longer to "solve" the equation.

Cat. stoves are fabulous, but you have to be very aware of the quality of the fuel you feed into the stove (seasoned and no painted "scrap"; it's a stove not a disposal!) and you have to be willing to deal with the combustor; cleaning it periodically and replacing it based on the quality and quantity of the fuel you provide.

People who are "dialled into" details and organization are likely good candidates for cat. stoves. So are "old time" burners who are dialled into how stoves burn relative to temperatures.
