Put it on 4 to begin with. Set the Room Temp./Stove Temp control Max clockwise. After 30 minutes at this maximum burn, fine tune the feed rate to obtain 1" of ash on the edge of the burn pot. The procedure is in the manual. Just remember, you are setting the feed rate to limit the maximum amount of fuel that the stove can burn. The feed rate is not used to control the stove in normal operation.
