If you find a mother load of pellets somewhere please do not hoard them. Get only what you need for this heating season then start stocking up again next Spring for the following heating season.

I run the following program for more of a public service and awareness for my time and efforts belief me I do not make much a profit. The point is the thought of converting more and more folks over to biomass for heating and rid our dependence from foreign oil

I wrote a message on my site about it on WoodPelletFuel.org as follows:
-------------------------
Please DO NOT order more than what you need this winter. There is NO REASON at all to stock pile your wood pellet fuel for the next 3, 4, or 5 years and beyond. Hoarding wood pellet fuel for more than one heating season knowing there is a current production shortage is inhumane Please only order what you need. Earth is NOT going to run out of trees, forest, or bio mass anytime soon. Some retailers are already starting to cap and set quantity limits on retail sales which is better for us all until more wood pellet mills can be developed nationwide.

--------------------------

This may or may not be the case further down south but up in the chilly north they are becoming harder to come by and I blame "Part" of it on hoarding.

I also belief that new bulk suppliers should set a seasonal quota depending on variables to heat your home.

These are only the opinions of "1" person but I would like to read and hear some other general public concerns.

I don't think many people have hoarded more than a winter's worth of pellets. The complaints we've heard have been about those people who have "hoarded" an entire winter's worth prior to the start of the heating season.

Given oil's decline, I think you'd be crazy to hoard several seasons worth of pellets right now. But I also think you're crazy if you did not secure this winter's supply by now.

maybe we should regulate each pellet stove owner and police the purchace and sale of pellets. %-P

Sorry, but I have 3 years worth that I purchased in April. What can I say? I'm a pellet pig.

BUY ALL YOU CAN I say! Allow the pellet companies to make $ and expand production capabilities. This is rediculous, next it will be peanut butter, soup, toilet paper ,beer and who knows what else! How about NO prebuy on HHO,propane ,or fire wood. Better tell Eric or Sonney that because they have umpteen years of stockpiled firewood that they're part of the problem of high firewood prices.
It's a FREE country ,BUY!

I have only what I need. That said buy as much as you want if you want 10 million tons and have the money, then do it. This is America capitalism not a socialist form of government where all is equal- that is equally poor.

Ok, well why hoard pellet fuel then for more than one year? And I don't want to hear "It's a free country" either.

Are you pellet pigs worried about future prices?, supply?, Something must be concerning you?

Who cares what their reasoning is! It's their right to have as much of a stash of fuel for heat as they want or can afford for piece of mind.(See Ant and Grasshopper story)

I don't believe many people have more than a years worth anyway because of space/storage constraints.

The real reason behind the shortage is because of the 400% increase in stove sales and raw material shortage.

Just so you know , I have 6 - 3lb jars of peanut butter in my pantry. Does that make me a PB hoarder. NO, just prepared for a NY snowbelt doosey that keeps me in for 2 weeks and prepared for the wife to make a massive batch of her famous choco chip/oatmeal cookies. SHAME ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see that many people buying up more than
a seasons worth for it to be an issue.
Do you have numbers for us?
The majority of the folks who post here, have enough
for the season. Some have more but most have
what they need.

I have all the pellets I need for this season -- 6.5 tons. I have maybe half a ton to spare.

If anything, all the people continually crying and moaning about us pellet hoarders ought to be THANKING all the people who stocked up on their pellets this spring and haven't bought any since, and there are a lot of us.

As they are driving / calling all over creation trying to find pellets right now during peak season, and at peak prices, they are not competing with the people who prepared themselves early. If nobody planned ahead, pellets would be $500/ton right now.

I'm going to "pig up" next spring again. If the complainers are smart, they'll do the same. Prices will likely be lower and supply will be likely plentiful.

Lol. Not another one. Wait til macman gets a load of this.

Oh Jesus, Mary, & Joseph....not another one!! Isn't one eernest4 enough???

Hey RingOfFire, so who died and decided that YOU makes the rules? Most everyone here is buying pellets because their scared to death what could happen again...$4-5+ heating oil, and outrageous prices for Propane. If what you say is true ("Earth is NOT going to run out of trees, forest, or bio mass anytime soon."), then what's the problem?

OK that's it! Now I have to add ANOTHER one to my signature.

LONG LIVE PELLET PIGS!!! OINK OINK

It is best not to mess with the free market. Remember gas lines in the 1970s? Could this lead to Government agents kicking down doors and rounding up Pellet Pigs?

Did I say I was making the rules?

then what's the problem? - hoarding for more than one season until supplies are up. Wake up. There are many others trying to convert over from oil and can't find pellet fuel beacause some greedy pig stock piled 3 seasons or more worth this past summer.

You pellet pigs act as if Earth is going to "Run Out". I think some of you need a shrink.

OK, Ring, let's see where you get your facts. Please list the "names" of all the Pellet Pigs that "hoarded" 3 seasons worth. First, you'll need to figure what 3 seasons worth is to everybody....ooohh wait....that might be hard to do, since everybody has different size houses, or more than 1 stove, or they have an older house that uses more heat than others, etc, etc.

OK, assuming you can figure a formula for that, what about the people that have a pellet furnace, and need 10-15 tons just to get through the winter because they heat exclusivly w/ pellets...are THEY pellet hoarders too?

I think you get my drift....and if you DON'T, then maybe the person who needs the shrink is........

What is worrying the pellet users is the same thing that happend (and is happening now) in 2005, stoves being sold is greater than the amount of pellets being generated. I wen't to my usual supplier and he had none, same with everyone else.... I paid $350 for a ton twice in 05 And I swore it would never happen again...... From then on I decided to have at least 2 tons in the basement before the season began....
It's no different from locking in prices on oil for a season, or from the typical New Englander who when they hear it's gonna snow has a urge to go to the grocery store and buy more bread, milk and Eggs than they could possibly need....
Try telling everyone down here during the recent gas shortage to only put $10 in per fillup and then make that 2 1/2 gallons last till the station got gas next week. It wasn't gonna happen..... you filled your tank .........why.......Because you didn't know when there was gonna be gas again........
Since I don't live there anymore I don't know, but I'm sure the news channels have been telling everyone to go out and buy a pellet stove like they did after Katrina.....
By the way I have done my part to keeping the pellet supply up in the northeast by moving south :cheese:

I gotta agree with macman. I just don't see this
"hoarding" you're speaking of. Not here on the forum, and
not with the people I know personally who have
pellet stoves.

I'd love to know who all these hoarders are?

With one ton of pellets equal to approx. 120 gal's of oil,
I'll be lucky if I have enough to heat my house through
to Spring if we have a really cold winter.

So basically it comes down to...

If both eernst4 & RingOfFire cannot find pellets because they wait
till the end of September, WE are hoarding all the pellets so they can't
have any. Get Real-

Your just missing the point of my awareness message. That is "More than what you need for one heating season"

Macman I do agree with you that there are many variances to what a household or commercial business needs, I mean to say set tonnage limits as individual usage varies. Also I am not targeting members here on hearth to point out, I am just mentioning "get what you only need for one season on hand" even if you keep topping your yearly supply off.
