Hello

Now is a good time to pull your auger and check those bearings! In this case I found the worst scanky rusted stick auger. So you may use some of the steps to fix your own here.
This Pelpro HHPP2BD is so rusted because it had damp pellets and stored in a basement!

See my last post on getting that rusty auger motor off!!! @#$%#$!!!!
https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads...-and-rather-rusty-auger-motor-removal.144489/

Has anyone seen such a rusty auger like this?

Pic 1 - After removing the auger motor and bolts, just tap the auger to remove auger and plate biscuit.
Pic 2 - 5 - Wow. this auger is rusted!
Pic 6 - Auger on the bench wire wheel
Pic 7 - Drill wire wheel gets in tight spots on auger
Pic 8 - 9 - Auger is all clean now

Hello

Oh no, the auger collar set screw was completely removed, but the collar is frozen on to the auger! Cannot change the scanky bottom bearing until it is removed!
PB Blaster and some tugging and banging did not help! I must pull out the air cutter!

Pic 12 - Third cut on auger collar
Pic 13 - Auger collar finally starting to come loose. More PB Blaser
Pic 14 - Got it off!

Hello

More Pics

I always like to upgrade the auger collar set screw that takes an Allen wrench to the much nicer set bolt that you can just use a rachet and throw a socket on it. :)

Pic 27 - Auger with 2 new Nylon bearings
Pic 29 - Auger sprayed with Dry Moly and Auger Motor with bracket ready to go
Pic 30 - Turn auger motor so flat spot is opposite bracket for easy installation
Pic 31 - Upgrade set screw to set bolt
Pic 32 - Auger re-installed with upgraded set bolt
Pic 33 - Tighten down new upgraded set bolt
Pic 34,35 New auger motor installed.

Auger now turns like butter! Better than new with no auger pox. (Sharp pimples of splatter slag from the fins welded to the shaft)

How did it get rusty?

It was in a basement, but some very damp pellets were left in the bottom of the hopper and in the auger chute that turned to mush!

See before and after pics of hopper with rusty auger. See Dry Moly now on polished auger!

That's a nice restoration.

Thanks BeGreen
Sand Blasting the fire box and burn pot is a little quicker and it comes out much better. :)
I put a new igniter in it and an upgraded brand new Accutron IV control panel so a T-Stat can be connected.

Hello

The OEM squirrel cage exhaust blower also died. The squirrel cage collects ash and seems to become more noisy and warbly than the impeller type. Also it is very hard to removee and clean because the venting must also be disconnected. Therefore, I upgraded to the quick change Fasco impeller motor that works well with the Accutron control panel.

That's not damp pellets that's wet pellets. My guess is the air in the basement condensates in the hopper. I imagine the pellets at one time we're just fine. Everyone blames the pellets. It's rarely ever the pellets. Most times is just plain old neglect from a stove owner. I call them bad stove owners. Then again if that auger was actually stainless steel like just about every other manufacturer it would be somewhat of a nonissue.
