In the first pic the maple wedged in against the cherry will come down first, the maple next to it will be next (it's topped off).

The Cherry looks like it will have lots of back pressure, I usually v the top then cut up from the bottom, is there a better way?

That how I do it Zap.
Sometimes with 10 to 12" ones, I just do it with an under cut, but know for sure which way thing are going to go.
Bigger ones the notch gives you a second or 2 of movement before it falls. Time to back out.
Had one that the top hung up in the tree, pulled it out with the ATV, didn't want to leave it out there.

This is the last of the worst hung up trees from 2008 micro burst, have a few more but not this bad. I will be hooking a cable up to it so I (The wife) can pull it to the right when looking at it from the back.

I think Hearth.com Members mentioned on another tree I was cutting about a v notch on the side opposite the side you are cutting from.

Once again, I never cut a vee. However, Scott is correct in cutting the opposite side; just reach over the top. What happens is that you create a weak spot in the log and if it should decided to go sideways, guess which way it will go. Right. It will go on the side that you have weakened.

okay, that's what I thought. I hate cutting down the dead pines, they don't behave like lives trees. You realy never know where they are going and the tops snap everywhere too. The wedges sure do help though. Thanks.
