Our propane heating stove (only heat in house) has developed a mind of its' own. All of a sudden the flame is higher than normal (did not change the setting) and is putting out soot. The glass window becomes covered in a matter of hours and some is going into the living room on the ceiling. We live in No. CA and did have some big wind and storms last week, but this has just started. Any suggestions on what be causing this? It is makinga mess. Thanks....

Sounds like a vent free unit? Or does it have an exhaust vent someplace? Did you have anything done with your LP tank recently? Refill or service? It sounds like someplace a regulator blew out and you have an increased pressure at the stove. It may need a new valve. I have seen the outside regulator on the house blow out and then do this to the fireplaces because of the increased pressure. You really need a service person to come out ASAP.
