i have a wood boiler meaning water my buddy is looking for a furnace which i thought meant hot air.

I think it might be possible to convert an oil/wood combo to gas, but combo furnaces are generally not very efficient with oil. Gas furnaces are so relatively cheap, I would recommend 2 separate furnaces for efficiency's sake. It might be a little more complicated and take up a little more room, but would probably be worth it in the long run.
