Chimney Smoke

So this is my first time burning with a metal chimney. I've been running around 6 weeks now burning oak chunks and uglies and 18 month white pine mixed with 18 month soft maple. It's been cold and windy for a couple days and when I started the fire this afternoon it looked like some small pieces of ash were out on the snow. When I checked them out they basically turn to dust when touched. My cap is an Olympia wood burning style with no screen. I assume it's fairly common to see some small junk like this rattle off the cap when windy? The cap has no visibly accumulated buildup, just a little discoloration and the flue looks good with just a light ash coating.

Yes, this can be pretty common. As long as the stack checks out clean I wouldn't worry about the cap. It's the coldest point in the smoke path.
