Looking at using the mix type of insulation. Just wondering if this makes its a permanant install, does it harden like cement?

It can be removed but its not gonna be easy.

What is the advantage of using one of these mixes over straight vermiculite or perlite?

One advantage is that you won't get bits of perlite/verm constantly sifting down through any gaps in the block-off plate. Not an issue if block plate is airtight. And also some branded pour-in mixes are tested & UL listed for use with certain liners. Not sure if that's true for generic perlite/verm?

I only have experience with "Thermix" brand. It does not set-up anywhere near as hard as concrete, but will support it's own weight & will hold the flex liner in there tight. Would be a pain to remove, but not impossible. If you have clay tiles that are miss-aligned I could see that making total removal of the mix very difficult without damaging the tiles.
