With all the bad news with the emerald ash borer, Dutch elm disease and all the other pests and diseases here's perhaps a bit of encouraging news . . .

we had one in the back yard when I was a kid
did the whole roasting chestnuts in the fireplace bit ( oven actually worked better )
that tree was finally dead in the 60ies though, not the 50ies
we used to throw rocks at them to try to knock more of them onto th ground and break the outer shell off by wacking them with even bigger rocks
