After fighting the good fight against Dutch elm disease and preserving the majestic elm named Herbie . . . Herbie eventually fell to the disease two years ago . . . and now the man (a former logger) who poured so much of his time and money to saving his beloved elm has died at the age of 103.
Perhaps it is fitting that he will be buried in a simple coffin made out of the wood planed from Herbie . . .
