If you stuck a solid 1 1/4" piece of stock in that position, it would deteriorate..........." Seriously caustic compound!!"...........A combination of air being drawn in during the burn time and creosote being forced out during the idle time. If this seal is broken ( huffing ) I think this is what happens. Again, just my opinion............Jesse
 
Are you guys using a draft fan? Don't know what huffing is but I do know those stove require one to operate with enough draft.

Sounds like you goop solution is a good one, did you consider another tube around the nipple or other ideas?
