I am considering removing the ash grate on my Isle royale. I'm thinking about cutting a sheet of steel to fill the hole, then putting fire brick down. Seems like it would increase the efficiency a bit? Wondering if this is a waste of time? I never use the ash pan so I'm not worried about losing that option.

I'd just let the ash pan fill up with ash and shovel out the stove when necessary. Ash is a good insulator and free.

I don't use my ash pan either. I was just wondering if there would be any value to having firebrick there instead of a grate
