replace fireplace with wood stove?

hi folks,

It seems my existing zero clearance fireplace is too small to accept any kind of insert, it is also too low in height to easily accept venting a stove through it.

what are my options as far as removing the whole fireplace (a Martin prefab SCF36MHA) and putting in a freestanding stove or some kind of zero clearance fireplace/stove insert thingy?!?!?!

Does anyone here have any experience with this?

All suggestions gratefully received.
