i have about two cord of rounds that i cut (and another 3 cord of log length that i am working on) BUT i wont have a splitter until Feb (year end bonus)

right now they are cut to size and tossed into a big pile on the ground -

do i need to stack them on pallets and cover them - twice the work as i will split and then re-stack on the pallets

should i toss a big tarp over the pile

are they fine where they stand

if it makes any difference – this is all hardwood – ie red oak and such

Thanks for your advice

Nah,
From now till then let them sit.
They'll still be alright to split then.

As longs as the ground the pile sits on is high enough to remain dry after a rain you should be OK.. If water pools in the area or even if the soil remains wet for long periods after a rain you may loose some of the ground contact stuff depending on the type of wood. At least that has been my experience.
