This weekend I stopped by and asked a land owner down the road (she owns over 500 acres right around me) if I could have a tree the county dropped by the road. She asked me to leave my name and number and she would get back to me. I hoped to hear from her. Today she calls and told me that I could have this tree and another down the road. And she asked if she could keep my number if she has more trees come down. View attachment 99126 photo-3.JPG photo-2.JPG photo-1.JPG

I am not sure what kind of maple it is. I will try to post some close ups of bark tomorrow.

Nice score. Don't ever turn one tree down, your score will go to the next guy, maybe that's why she called?

Some sort of gift is in order - not sure what they need but I would start with a nice letter in a card thanking them and explaining how you and you family appreciate the heat. Offering any help in the form of labor is always nice and stopping to pitch in anytime you see that type of activity going on at their residence. Having access to 500 acres that close to home does not come easy and warrants "anything necessary" to keep the gift going!!

    Congrats on a fine score

That is great and will no doubt make more available as the years pass so long as you do a good job of cleaning up and show appreciation.

    Nice load, right there!
You might end up getting access to dead standing wood in there, then you would be all set.

Maybe ask if she burns wood and would like some help getting it in her wood burner? Cut split and stack wood there, store it there, bring home what you need.

The close-up shot of the end grain is a good example for people in helping ID Hard Maple vs. Soft Maple. Note the color of the heartwood very typical of Hard Maple, Soft maple will often have a reddish tint and is distinctly differance in appearance. Also note how brown the inner layer of bark is typical of Hard Maple. Again Soft Maple will exhibit alot more reddish hue in that inner layer.

500 acres is a great big old sandbox to play in!! Perhaps you could clean up the brush too as the best gesture of gratitude. Sugar maple beats out Black locust in my book. Theres a lot of work there but 2 maybe 3 cords of sugar maple?? Hell yeah! A good job of cleaning up and you could perhaps have many years of great wood harvesting.

Im confused. Do you mean sugar maple is reddish? or the soft maples? The "computer" screen Im looking at shows an orangish burnt sienna color in the trees heartwood. The pictures look yellowish orangey. I just wanna know if we are looking at the same colors?

Id much rather have maple syrup over firewood but if you are refering to BTUs they score together. I am of course commenting on the scent. Being an aromatic wood snob.
They are both listed together at 23.2 on chimney sweep. I know this site has a lot of locust fans. I also dont aways agree with chimneysweeps numbers.
I think apple wood should be much higher on the charts.

Too bad it is raining! It is suppose to rain all day tomorrow. I hope to have that tree cleaned up by the end of the weekend.
