Question:

I have a Sierra insert that I bought new in 1983. It came with a small cast iron bin that could be used to burn coal in lieu of wood. My question is could I safely burn wood pellets in this coal bin?

Answer:

No- you cannot burn pellets in such a setup. A stove must have dozens of different electrical and control elements in order to correctly burn wood pellets. In effect- this means ONLY a pellet stove can burn pellets.
