A year or two ago I made a wood box on wheels (see picture). It had six casters under it, and to bring wood in, I rolled it over to the sliding glass door and loaded it up, then rolled it back next to the hearth.

Recently I found that the wood box moved more easily with furniture sliders (like these: http://www.ezmoves.com/products/prodMain.html). So I removed the casters, and added some legs that fit the sliders just right. Now it's a real pleasure to move the box to the door and back.

Cool idea...bet it saves on the back (compared to no coasters or rollers) AND I'd bet there's less "carpet indentation" due to the sliders having a larger surface area to spread the weight, especially when you have a heavy load on it!
 
That's a great idea and it looks good too. Now if I could only modify one to climb stairs.....
