I have a 27 ton yard machine splitter with a 5 hp honda motor . Its 5 years old and still like new, but the ram speed has allways been slow , and it can be stoped by a large round . Ive used lots of splitters that cycle twice as fast . Do you think there it a problem? would it help if the wedge was sharper ? The 5hp honda sips fuel and runs great . any ideas?

Feeling the Heat
The splitter with a 5 hp. engine will only have a 11 gpm pump and I believe the 27 ton model has a 4 1/2" bore cylinder. That combination will be slow especially if you are not running the engine at full throttle.

I have a 5hp engine and the only thing is slows down to a stop is elm...if I'm not paying attention. There's a knurled wheel the size of a nickel next to your carb, that's the governor, try screwing it one turn clockwise or just keep dicking with it until your satisfied then back it off a hair. Hydraulic rams are imo slow but it shouldn't stall on easy splitting wood and don't over do it with the governor. And double check your fluid levels and replace the hydro filter.
With elm and other real knotty wood try shaving it off the side like you did when hand splitting rather than splitting it right down the middle and you should be OK. You have a good splitter.
